Romita, who was born on January 24, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, graduated in 1947 from the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan and began working for a salary when he was just 17 years old (for the Manhattan General Hospital).

He first found employment as a ghost artist at Timely Comics, the forerunner to Marvel Comics, after working as an inker at a lithograph firm.
